Asset Substate Deletion

Hello

I am reviewing our current Asset Substates and need to remove some which are no longer required. 

Unfortuantely, some assets have been associated with these substates. 

I wondered if someone could advise if I delete one of the substates, what effect this would have on the assets using it? Would the substate of these records just disappear or would it remember the current substate until someone physically changes it? 

I have about 1000 records which will be effected so keen to find out the effect prior to deleting anything.

You cannot delete a Substate that is associated to one or more Assets.
