Deleting unused BPMs

I'm trying to find a way of deleting any OLD, unused BPMs and ICs from our instance. 

I can't find an easy way of seeing which of these are actually being used, but I do know that, if I select a BPM to be deleted, but that BPM is being used in a request, then I get an error message and that BPM is then NOT deleted. 

So, my question is, if I select a bunch of BPMs or ICs and hit the delete button, will they ONLY be deleted if they're not linked to any running requests, or if they're not associated with a CI anywhere? 

Or is there a better way of knowing which of these I can safely delete?
