Email not sending, but sending, no timeline entry

So today we have a request that we can email from but the email says that it 'fails to send' but then does eventually and there is nothing entered into the timeline and so we are getting very confused. Has anyone seen this before?

@Jeremy if you go into the Sent Items folder, select the email and click on the dual arrow icon in the email toolbar it should display the  Message Delivery Status.

The log should indicate if there are any errors.  From looking at the log and the send time in the request timeline was it sent first time and in a timely manner, also are there are send failures listed here?
